Arkansas Abortion Support Network — Accessibility Audit & Wireframe
Project type
UX Case Study & Design
Role
Accessibility Auditor / UX Designer
Tools
Balsamiq (Wireframes), Excel (Audit data), Word (Annotated screenshots)
The Challenge
Audit three high-traffic pages of a live nonprofit site — home, "Need Help?," and the contraceptive mailing program page — against WCAG 2.2 AA criteria across all four POUR principles (Perceivable, Operable, Understandable, Robust), then design solutions.
This one is personal: AASN provides some of the most needed healthcare-access resources in my state.
Process
Working from a POUR-based framework, I audited each page against 54 individual WCAG criteria, using tools like screen-reader simulation, keyboard-only navigation, and contrast checkers — then triaged every failure as Critical (blocks access to content) or Moderate (affects decorative elements only).
Key Findings
The audit surfaced 16 WCAG failures, 13 of them critical, and confirmed the site was not compliant with ADA Title III. The most severe:
Pastel gradient backgrounds and the site's blue footer both failed minimum contrast ratios for text
The "Quick Exit" button — a safety feature meant to let users instantly leave the site — had insufficient contrast against its background and physically overlapped the "Skip to Content" link, breaking keyboard navigation for the very users who rely on it most
Multiple logos, icons, and images had no alt text, making core navigation invisible to screen readers
Page headers were being skipped entirely during keyboard and screen-reader navigation due to incorrect heading structure
Several links lacked contextual purpose ("click here" with no destination cues)
Solution
I rebuilt all three pages as annotated Balsamiq wireframes, with every fix mapped directly back to its WCAG criterion:
Restructured heading hierarchy so screen readers and keyboard navigation follow a logical, complete path
Redesigned the Quick Exit button as a sticky element that never obscures the Skip to Content link, at compliant contrast
Specified alt text requirements for every non-text element
Rewrote link copy so the purpose is clear out of context
Outcome
A full audit deliverable (POUR breakdown, executive summary, annotated wireframes) that gives AASN's team an actionable, prioritized path to ADA Title III compliance.
A full WCAG 2.2 audit of a real nonprofit site, translated into annotated wireframes that bring it into ADA Title III compliance.
